Can My Child Need More Than One Type of Therapy?

When a child has difficulties in more than one area of development, parents may wonder whether they need to choose just one type of therapy.

The answer is that some children may benefit from support in more than one developmental area.

For example, a child may need help with communication while also requiring support with behavior, social interaction, or everyday skills.

The right combination depends on the child’s individual needs.

Why Might a Child Need Different Types of Support?

Development does not happen in separate areas.

A child experiencing communication difficulties may also become frustrated when they cannot express what they want. Another child may have difficulty participating in school because of challenges with attention, behavior, social interaction, or everyday skills.

When several areas affect a child’s daily life, addressing them together may provide a more complete support approach.

What Types of Therapy or Support May Be Involved?

Depending on the child’s needs, support may include:

Language Development Support

Support can focus on communication and language development when a child has difficulty expressing or understanding communication.

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)

ABA may be considered when behavioral or skill-development goals require structured behavioral support.

Psychology Support

Psychology Support can address emotional, behavioral, and social concerns as part of a broader developmental approach.

Occupational Support and Motor Skills

Occupational support may help with motor skills, sensory-related challenges, task participation, and everyday independence.

Social Skills Development

Some children benefit from structured opportunities to develop communication and interaction skills with others.

Not every child needs all of these services. The appropriate combination should be based on the child’s needs and goals.

How Do You Know Which Services Your Child Needs?

Parents do not need to determine the correct combination of services on their own.

At Mind Center for Individuals with Disabilities (MCID), a Developmental Evaluation brings together observations across communication, behavior, social interaction, and daily skills so the recommended plan reflects the whole child, not a single concern.

The findings can then guide a developmental plan with relevant goals and services.

MCID’s approach is designed around individualized support and collaboration across developmental areas rather than assuming that every child needs the same program.

Can Different Services Work Together?

In some cases, yes.

When several professionals or support areas are involved, coordination can help keep goals connected and ensure that everyone is working toward the child’s broader developmental needs.

This can be particularly useful when communication, behavior, social interaction, learning, and independence overlap.

When Should You Seek an Evaluation?

Consider arranging an evaluation if you are noticing concerns in more than one area, such as:

  • Communication and behavior
  • Social interaction and communication
  • Learning and attention
  • Daily skills and independence
  • Behavior and emotional regulation

You do not need to wait until you know exactly which therapy your child needs.
